The GDG series disc-type permanent magnet generator, produced by GREEF NEW ENERGY, features a unique design without an iron core. In this generator, the spindle and rotor are arranged in a stacked disc shape, with the stator fixed at the center and rotors positioned on both sides, rotating around it. Notably, the spindle contains only windings and does not include an iron core.

Both the stator and rotor adopt a flat disc structure, utilizing an axial air gap magnetic flux. They are alternately arranged along the axial direction. Thanks to the short axial length and large diameter of the disc generator, it allows for an easy implementation of a multi-pole configuration. This design results in a high power-to-mass ratio and supports low-speed operation, enabling the generator to start efficiently at low wind speeds.
Additionally, the GDG disc-type generators are characterized by their compact size, low energy consumption, lightweight, and robust structure, which contribute to their high efficiency. These attributes make it an ideal choice for direct-drive vertical axis wind turbines, as the rotor's placement minimizes resistance against the wind.
The series includes two main variants: the outer rotor and the inner rotor types. In the outer rotor version, the shaft remains stationary while the casing rotates, with cables routed through the middle of the shaft. Conversely, the inner rotor type features a fixed casing with the shaft rotating, and the cables are discharged from outside the casing.

“I built a small pico hydro system on the creek behind my off-grid cabin. The water head is only 3 meters and flow rate around 0.2 m³/s – too low for most generators. This axial flux coreless unit starts generating usable power at just 150 RPM. No cogging, no iron loss, and it’s silent. I’m getting 300-400W continuously, 24/7. My old induction generator would barely light an LED at that speed. Absolutely perfect for low-head hydro.”
