The GDG series disc type permanent magnet generator, developed by GREEF NEW ENERGY, features a unique design without an iron core. In this generator, the spindle and rotor are arranged in a disc shape, with the stator fixed centrally while the rotor rotates on both sides. Notably, the spindle contains only windings and does not include an iron core.
Both the stator and rotor adopt a flat disc structure, utilizing axial air gap magnetic flux. The stator and rotor alternate in the axial direction, which allows for a compact design. Due to its short axial length combined with a large diameter, this disc generator can easily accommodate a multi-pole configuration, resulting in a high power-to-mass ratio.
This design offers several advantages, including a low rated speed, the ability to start at low wind speeds, compact size, reduced energy consumption, light weight, and overall high efficiency. These features make it especially suitable for direct-drive vertical axis wind turbines, where the rotor's vertical mounting produces minimal resistance to wind.
The GDG series disc type permanent magnet generators are available in two configurations: outer rotor and inner rotor types. In the outer rotor design, the shaft remains stationary while the casing rotates, and the cable exits through the center of the shaft. Conversely, the inner rotor design features a stationary casing with a rotating shaft, and the cable is routed outside the casing.

“I built a small pico hydro system on the creek behind my off-grid cabin. The water head is only 3 meters and flow rate around 0.2 m³/s – too low for most generators. This axial flux coreless unit starts generating usable power at just 150 RPM. No cogging, no iron loss, and it’s silent. I’m getting 300-400W continuously, 24/7. My old induction generator would barely light an LED at that speed. Absolutely perfect for low-head hydro.”
